Before you can start closed testing, your app needs a complete Play Store listing. Google requires specific information to be filled in before publishing any testing release. Here is everything you need to know about creating a listing that both passes Google's review and attracts testers.

What a Store Listing Includes

Your Play Store listing is the public-facing page users see when they find your app. It consists of an app title, a short description, a full description, screenshots, a feature graphic, an app icon, and a category classification.

For closed testing, your listing does not need to be fully polished - testers find your app through the direct opt-in link, not through search. But your listing must be complete enough to pass Google's review, and a more complete listing supports a smoother production access transition.

App Title

Your app title can be up to 30 characters. Choose something descriptive and memorable. Google evaluates your title for keyword relevance, but keyword stuffing is a policy violation. Write a title that describes what your app does clearly, not a keyword list.

Short Description

The short description appears in search results and on your app's listing page above the fold. Maximum 80 characters. This is your app's elevator pitch. Write one sentence that describes what the app does for the user.

Full Description

The full description can be up to 4,000 characters. Write naturally for humans first, then consider keywords. Structure your description to answer the three questions every potential user has: what does this app do, who is it for, and why should I install it over alternatives.

Use paragraph breaks and short sections. Do not use excessive formatting symbols or keyword repetition. Google penalizes keyword stuffing in descriptions.

Screenshots

Google Play requires a minimum of 2 screenshots and allows up to 8. Screenshots are the most viewed part of your listing - users evaluate screenshots before reading descriptions.

Show your app's core functionality in the first screenshot. Include UI states that demonstrate value - not empty states or loading screens. Use real device frames and real app content, not placeholder data.

For closed testing, your screenshots are seen by testers and by Google's review team. Ensure they accurately represent your app's actual functionality.

Feature Graphic

The feature graphic appears at the top of your listing on many devices. It is 1024 x 500 pixels. Use it to show your app's brand and primary value proposition. Text on the feature graphic should be minimal - it needs to be readable at small sizes.

App Icon

Your app icon is 512 x 512 pixels and must not have rounded corners (Google adds rounding in its display). Use a clean, recognizable icon that works at small sizes. Avoid text in icons smaller than 48sp.

Category

Choose the most accurate category for your app. Categories affect search discoverability. Choosing an incorrect category to avoid competition is a policy violation and creates a poor user experience for anyone who finds your app in the wrong category.

Content Rating

Complete the content rating questionnaire honestly. The questionnaire takes about 10 minutes and determines your app's age rating. An incorrect content rating is a policy violation.

Data Safety

Complete the Data Safety section accurately. Describe what data your app collects, whether it shares data with third parties, and whether data can be deleted. Incomplete or inaccurate Data Safety information is a policy violation and a common rejection reason.

App Content

Under Policy → App content, complete all required declarations including target audience, sensitive app features, and any required permissions justifications.

Complete your listing and then list your app on TestSlot at testslot.io.
